We come in contact with brand names all day. Brands are often heavily promoted and have an impact on our lives. And yet there is not much known about them. Where do they originate from? In what parts of the world is the brand name known? How popular is it?
This website has a very specific goal. We want to find all brand names that became the generic term for a kind of product or service. This is called trademark generalisation, trademark erosion, or genericide. Hence the name for this website.
To reach our goal, we will:
- collect the most complete list of genericides all around the world;
- follow the popularity of the terms on the list by regular surveys;
- and make our information universally accessible.
Our brand and trademark knowledge are collected by a diverse network: volunteers from countries in different continents, as well as experts and professionals in the field.
